Bio-medicine, biotechnology and ethics

Progress in Molecular Biology and Genomics has signifcantly increased the understanding of nature and its principles: Results from the analysis of the human genome show that many diseases and characteristics of individuals are influenced by inherited genes. But we need a much better understanding of how the environment interacts with the genetic dispositions to evaluate the balance between nature and nurture.

Microbiology, Vaccines

Bacterial cell wall components, such as endodotoxins, LPS, are highly immunogenic. This can be deleterious for human health in case of infections but possibly small amounts of such compounds are necessary for human health and the development and pertinance of an active immune system:

Improved vaccines are increasingly demanded for the protection against many infections but also in the prevention of complex diseases.

Improvements of immune responses, adjuvant activities, the use of antigen presenting cells or delivery systems are aspects of work in the department of microbiology and biotechnology, Prof Werner Lubitz at the University of Vienna.
