Work in the area of GM food- and GMO environmental safety
| Safety for human health and the environment needs to be seen in a holistic way, including socioeconomic effects, aspects of globalised trading versus local specificities and ethic conclusions. This is specifically described in the WHO study on modern food Biotechnology. |

Experiences from GM technology show that societies need to shape technological developments to achieve a local specific adaptation and production of public goods )

- There will be a need for an integrated safety assessment linking health, food safety and environmetal safety. Integrated safety assessment for GVO, Haslberger
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) under the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) regulates environmental safety of transboundary movement of GMO/ LMO. The problems observed with contamination of Mexican maize landraces with genes from various GM maize lines from the US must not happen again. However, to define what is a damage to environment, ecosystems, biodiversity or landscapes will be hard agree and harmonise.
